In-Home Certified Lactation Support in Northern & Central New Jersey

How Can A Certified Lactation Professional Help with Breastfeeding Issues?

A Certified Lactation Professional helps with breastfeeding issues using an evidence-based approach, drawing upon their advanced training and real-world experience performing their professional role, in order to help parents find workable solutions to the breastfeeding issues they may be encountering.

We often serve new parents, but even second or third-time Moms contact us. Often, families we've worked with before will reach out to us again for our Lactation Services, as breastfeeding every infant is different, as each is a different baby with their own personality, feeding style, and so much more. Therefore, each subsequent breastfeeding experience with each infant can differ significantly from one another.

Starting your breastfeeding journey is a transformative experience, and for most new parents, it's not seamless start. That's okay; it's normal.

While breastfeeding is a natural and normal experience, there are certainly challenges and new skills to be learned.

Lactation Professionals Rely on An Evidence-Based Approach to Breastfeeding and Lactation

Every Certified Lactation Professional, from CLCs to IBCLCs, and every other LC Certification, relies on a medically-sound science-based approach, leaning heavily upon the growing body of research on lactation and breastfeeding.

An evidence-based approach to Lactational Care and Breastfeeding means that we empower and educate the patient exclusively utilizing medically-accepted, established scientific fact, and nothing else.

Goals of the Certified Lactation Professional

Certified Lactation Professionals may help with breastfeeding issues in various ways, utilizing different approaches, philosophies, and training from any number of schools, even possessing varying credentials from different respected, and recognized, certifying organizations.

While this is certainly true, it's also fact that all Certified Lactation Care Professionals have the same goal in mind, which is making sure that the client seeking help receives answers to their questions, help with issues the parents would like help with, and also, address any other issues, what may be amiss that the new parents miss, as well.

And so, a Certified Lactation Professional provides workable solutions to breastfeeding issues for the new mother, infant, and entire family, as support system.

What is the issue? What are the factor contributing to making this issue happen? How can we work through this to improve the situation? This is the way we proceed.

My Personal Goals Providing Lactation Support

Speaking personally, I can say that my goal as a Certified Lactation Care Specialist is to solve the puzzle I'm presented with. It's a mystery to solve; that's how I see it.

And, a lot is riding on the success of my investigation: The very health and growth of an infant, but also the health and comfort of the mother.

And, another key goal is providing effective advisement that yields positive results.

It's great helping the parents and everyone else involved who is assisting postpartum, like members of the extended family, to be able to worry less, and thrive during this special time.

I want the baby to be able to be exclusively breastfed, when possible. I want to meet the new Mom where she is and not overwhelm her with goals of exclusive breastfeeding. I want the mother to be pain-free, comfortable, and confidant.

And, I want for the dyad to grow in their understanding of how breastfeeding works, together, as mother and child, enjoying the shared experience of closeness, unencumbered by problems.

I have to discover why there are issues, identifying underlying causes. I have to communicate effectively to the Mom what we can do to try working through the issues, what solutions might work.

Probably like most other LCs, I spend some of my time thinking about the families that I serve when I'm not working with them. I always hope that things are going well, and when I return to see everything improved and the baby gaining weight, I feel relieved that the help I offered was communicated effectively and applied in a way that worked.

Why Choose In-Home In-Person Lactation Care?

If you are facing challenges like a painful latch, low milk supply, or general nursing anxiety, you don’t have to navigate it alone — or even leave your house.

Many IBCLCs and CLCs provide tele-health sessions, meaning you can have a chat via Zoom meeting in front of your computer, right at home. However, we feel that the best Lactation Care is performed in-person.

An In-Home, In-Person Consultation is the ideal form of care. It’s particularly effective when you are struggling with the mechanics of feeding rather than just needing information.

Better View: A Lactation Professional can see what's happening better, and can even shift or move to get a better view of the latch.Even with 4K, our eyes work best in real life.

Hands-On Assistance: A consultant can physically help guide the baby’s head, adjust your hold, or adjust the positioning of the baby in your arms. This is impossible to replicate via a screen.

Oral Assessment: We can also physically inspect, and feel, the inside of the baby's mouth to check for tongue-tie, palate issues. These are things a camera might miss.

Weighted Feeds: The in-home Lactation Consultant brings a professional-grade scale to weigh the baby before and after a feeding. This provides the exact number of ounces the baby transferred, which is the best way to ease "low supply" anxiety.

Stethoscope: Using a stethoscope, we can actually listen to the milk transfer as the baby feeds. Again, this is impossible via a telehealth session.

Home Ergonomics: We see your actual nursing chair, pillows, and setup, allowing us to make physical adjustments to your environment to prevent back and nipple pain, as necessary.

Telehealth Lactation Consultation

Telehealth is an excellent tool for specific scenarios, and we do offer this service via Zoom, but please know that for this application, telehealth does have its extreme limitations.

When Telehealth Lactation Care Is Ideal:

Communicable Disease: If anyone in the house has a fever, cough, or a known contagious illness (like the flu or COVID-19), telehealth is the responsible choice to prevent spreading it to the consultant (who visits many other newborns).

Quick Troubleshooting: Great for "Is this rash normal?", "How do I use this pump?", or "How do I transition back to work?"

Accessibility: If you live in a "maternity care desert" where no practicing lactation help may be found anywhere nearby. (Definitely not New Jersey or metro NYC!)

Why Telehealth Is Inferior:

The "Camera Angle" Struggle: It can be incredibly frustrating to try and hold a crying baby, a nursing pillow, and a smart-phone at the perfect angle for the consultant to see the latch. Trying to maneuver into view of your laptop's camera can be equally challenging.

Technical Glitches: Poor Wi-Fi or audio lag can make real-time coaching difficult, if not impossible.

No Physical Exam: Unfortunately, we cannot perform a weighted feed or a manual breast check to identify specific issues like deep tissue clogs or mastitis.

Certified Lactation Professionals In New Jersey

As Certified Lactation Professionals providing mobile, in-person care, we bring clinical expertise and compassionate support directly to your own living space. That works out well for families practicing 40 days of staying home for the new mother, as people from India, China, Korea, South America, and part of Europe and Africa practice.

Serving families throughout Northern and Central New Jersey, I specialize in helping parents reach their unique feeding goals in the comfort and privacy of their own homes.

Newborns and travel don't always mix. In-home in-person visits allow for a more accurate assessment of your "natural" feeding environment. By observing a feeding where you are most comfortable, we can tackle real-world issues in real-time. Even with a good monitor, telehealth can not replace observing the dyad with our own eyes.

Zero Travel Stress: Skip the diaper bag packing and the NJ traffic. I come to you.

Personalized Clinical Assessment: Every baby and body is different. We develop a custom care plan tailored to your medical history and goals.

Whole-Family Support: Partners and caregivers are encouraged to participate, ensuring everyone is on the same page for your support system.

Our In-Person Lactation Services

Whether you are a first-time parent or adding to your family, our sessions cover the full spectrum of lactation and infant feeding:

Latch & Positioning Assistance: Correcting painful latches to ensure comfortable, efficient feeding sessions.

Weighted Feeds: Using a professional-grade scale to measure exactly how much milk your baby is transferring.

Milk Supply Management: Evidence-based strategies for increasing milk supply, managing oversupply, or balancing supplementation.

Pumping & Flange Sizing: Ensuring your equipment fits correctly and you have an efficient pumping schedule for returning to work.

Comprehensive Oral Exams: Assessing for tethered oral tissues (tongue or lip ties) and providing guidance on next steps.

Bottle Refusal & Transitions: Helping babies learn to take a bottle or transition between different feeding methods.

What to Expect During Your Visit

A typical initial consultation lasts about 90 minutes to 2 hours. During this time, we will:

Review Health History: A deep dive into your pregnancy, birth, and early feeding experience.

Physical Assessment: A gentle check of the baby’s mouth and your breast health.

Feeding Observation: I observe a full feeding session to identify latch mechanics and baby’s behavior.

Care Plan Creation: You will receive a written, easy-to-follow plan and a superbill to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement.
